Dee Dee Warwick: I’m Gonna Make You Love Me

The American family gospel singing group. Larry Drinkard (uncle), Nicky (Nicholas) Drinkard (uncle), Anne Drinkard-Moss (aunt), Emily Drinkard (Cissy Houston) (aunt), Reebie (Marie) Drinkard (aunt), Lee (Arthur) Drinkard Warrick (mother and group’s manager), Judy (Guions) Clay (adopted sister) | After an appearance at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, they recorded the first gospel album to appear on a major label, the live album ‘A Joyful Noise’, for RCA Records in 1959

Older sister. “Dionne has taught me to finish what I start. That’s mainly what I’ve learned from Dionne. Dionne is not a slacker, she doesn’t fall short. And unless she makes a mistake – and everybody makes those – fortunately she’s been able to recoup what she’s made a mistake about, what she had lost. And I’ve learned that I have to do the same thing, and I do. You know, it’s not easy. It’s a bitter pill sometimes, but you do it.”

Aunt. “Oh, really, Whitney was phenomenal. And a movie star, and the whole thing. It’s like the Midas touch. I’m saying Jesus! She was tenacious, yeah, she did what she wanted to do. She was respectful, you know. Cissy taught me, taught her. Well, how was she a good teacher, Cissy? No nicest, no nicest. If you’re going to do it, do it. If you’re not. But that’s the way my family is. It’s like if you’re going to do it, go ahead and do it. But do it right, do it well.”

Cousin. “Whitney did tell me that one of her primary vocal influences was Dee Dee,” says soul music historian David Nathan. “People think it’s usually her mum or her cousin Dionne. But actually, it’s her other cousin.”

Step sister. American soul and gospel singer, the older sister of Sylvia St. Claire (The Sweet Inspirations). She became a regular performer with the Drinkard Singers, which included Larry Drinkard, Nick Drinkard, Anne Drinkard-Moss, Emily Drinkard (Cissy Houston), Reebie Drinkard, Lee Warrick (group’s manager) | The background vocals for Doris Troy
